The Victorian Ambulance Union Incorporated (VAU) was informed last night that one of our members, a paramedic, has tested positive to COVID-19.

Five other paramedics who have been in close contact with the member have been placed in isolation as a precaution.

At this stage it is unknown how the member contracted the virus.

Many of our members are feeling anxious about responding to COVID-19 cases, and the rapidly changing procedures relating to COVID-19 has caused confusion.

Several Health and Safety Representatives have raised safety concerns about being directed to respond to cardiac arrest cases without full PPE in order to save time responding to the patient. This practice has caused enormous concern for the paramedics responding to these cases.

Quotes attributable to Danny Hill, Secretary Victorian Ambulance Union

“This highlights the dangers our members and all health workers face during this pandemic. Paramedics and ambulance workers are responding to patients in uncontrolled environments and are at significant risk of infection without the right PPE”.

“Everyday the union gets dozens of calls from members concerned about COVID-19. There is certainly a lot of anxiety for paramedics and ambulance workers at the moment”.

“I have spoken to the member. She is recovering at home and in good spirits”.
