READ THE FINE PRINT BEFORE YOU SIGN
The Victorian Ambulance Union (VAU) has recently received several complaints from members who have been surprised once becoming aware of expectations of positions or opportunities they have accepted.
In some cases, members have been provided with verbal assurances about a particular role and signed a contract in good faith, but upon beginning the role have been required to perform tasks, or work rosters or travel to locations they weren’t aware of.
Once a position is accepted or a contract signed, it can be very difficult to unwind. It is also difficult once you have accepted a new position, to go back to your previous position if you change your mind.
It is important to disregard any verbal assurances and to do your own research based on what is in writing. The VAU strongly advises members to thoroughly review the terms and conditions of any contract prior to accepting and/or signing. This includes reviewing and understanding any documents referred to in the contract such as a policy or enterprise agreement (remembering that any contract is subject to the relevant enterprise agreement).
If you are unsure about the terms and conditions of employment in a new position or contract you should ask your employer in the first instance. The VAU is always happy to provide further industrial advice before you sign. These can be sent through to memberqueries@vau.org.au
In solidarity.
