WORKPLACE BULLYING IN NEPT
Recently, the VAU have noticed an increase in members reporting that they have experienced or have witnessed bullying behaviour in the workplace.
Bullying is a big problem in the workforce. Sadly, the ambulance industry is not immune. WorkSafe takes a strong position against bullying and frequently deals with these matters using specialist inspectors such as the Psycho-Social unit. WorkSafe cannot deal with any matters that they do not know about, however.
What is Bullying behaviour?
The definition below is taken straight from the WorkSafe website –
Workplace bullying is repeated, unreasonable behaviour directed at an employee or group of employees that creates a risk to health and safety.
This includes unnecessary negative remarks or comments, comments or actions designed to belittle or humiliate, lies or rumours spoken about another employee and false reporting of an incident.
It is still bullying no matter who perpetrates the behaviour, even if it is your work partner, immediate manager, the CEO, the nurse you are handing over to or even a doctor in ED.
What can I do about this behaviour?
We strongly encourage members to report any bullying they experience or witness according to the policy that applies in their workplace. Sometimes there are provisions in the Enterprise Agreement (EA) that deal with bullying, harassment or discrimination. When this is the case, the VAU using the process described in your EA. Of course, we will support you through the process.
In many cases, the matter can be resolved promptly and in a satisfactory way for all concerned. It is important to remember that unreported bullying can get worse if not addressed.
If any member wishes to report bullying, the VAU encourage you to speak to your local delegate or contact the VAU directly by emailing [email protected] (or the contact form on our website). Alternatively, you can contact one of the NEPT Organisers as listed below.
